About the song

Since I’ve lived here on the eastern shore of Maryland I’ve worked on a
number of the fishing boat.  A few of my friends make a living off the water.
One of them has worked as a waterman all his life.  Just as his father
raised a family while being a fisherman.  He too has raised two sons an a
daughter.  Much of the time being away at sea.  Sweet Memory is a song
about what keeps a hard working man like that going.

SWEET MEMORY
   by Paul Smith  2002
        capo 2nd fret

      Em                                              D
Well it’s been six hard days, and seven long nights
                               C                       Em    G
That  I’ve been toting down the line.
                                     D
           Working on this fishing boat,
            C                      D
                putting in the time.

    Em                                     D
The work is hard,  but the pay is good
                              C                            Em
and that’s the way that it ought to be,
                       G                             D
but the thing that keeps me going
                  C                         Em
                is my sweet memory.

Of the women that I love,
and the children that she bore.
               Two son’s and a daughter,
no I could ever want for more.
    There’s a many a wander to behold
          while working upon the sea,
but the thing that keeps me going
                     is my sweet memory.
Of the woman that I love,
and the children that she gave to me.
While the kids are home and just a growing
I’m a working away at sea.
Just one more tow and the hull is full
then well soon be on our way.
                Steaming for O. C. harbor
with the fresh catch of the day.

Soon will be on our way... Will be on our way... Yes! We’re on our way.

   (Bridge)

Well it’s been six hard days, and seven long nights
That  I’ve been toting down the line.
          Working on the Atlantic Dawn
with a good old friend of mine

        Well I’m satisfied with living
and that’s the way that it ought to be,
but the thing that keeps me going
                is my sweet memory.

(coda)      My memory...My memory...Sweet memory.
